Lake Erie College Suffrage Memorial
The Suffrage Memorial Committee, made up of northeast Ohio educators and members of the Ohio History Service Corps, is working to develop a suffrage memorial at Lake Erie College in front of College Hall. The memorial will have its dedication on August 26, 2021 with the unveiling of a Pomeroy Foundation "National Votes for Women Trail" historical marker and four interpretive signs highlighting the women and organizations that made an impact on the local, state, and national suffrage movement.
Lake Erie College received a grant for a Pomeroy Foundation historical marker, one of five awarded throughout the state in commemoration of the women's suffrage centennial. The Pomeroy marker honors Mary Evans, President of Lake Erie College (formerly Lake Erie Female Seminary) from 1868-1909, for helping shape and inspire future generations of women who continued the effort towards equal rights for women.
NE Ohio "Valiant Visionaries of the Vote" Driving Tour
Our driving tour has gone digital!
The driving tour was digitized and expanded on Clio at https://www.theclio.com/tour/1621.
This tour takes you to the historic sites and museums across northeast Ohio that either played an integral role in the Women's Suffrage Movement, by hosting individuals or events related to the movement, or contains artifacts and memorabilia that tell the story of the meetings and events pertaining to women's suffrage rights. Many of the leading suffragists of the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries were native or local to the region, and often obtained an education from Oberlin College or Lake Erie College's predecessor institution, Lake Erie Female Seminary.
Our unique outdoor displays will still be viewable at some of the original tour sites.
